Welcome to LiveFreeFamily! We’d like to share a bit about ourselves so you can understand how we came to be where we are today.
My wife and I decided to start this blog to document our journey to financial independence/retiring early (FIRE). Our goal is to share what we are learning about the path to financial independence with other young families out there. So, if you have recently traded $19 avocado toast and mimosas for diapers and onesies, then this blog may just be for you!
There are quite a few financial independence blogs out there that are excellent resources for learning and improving the flexing of our financial independence muscles. I have experienced one drawback with them…most of them have already achieved FIRE. While that is empowering to see they have met their goals, sometimes it’s nice to know you are not the only one still slugging it out in the wealth accumulation trenches while also growing your family. Enter…the Live Free Family.
WHO ARE WE?
In 2014, I was relocated from the Midwest to New York City where I work in the Financial District. As an urbanite, I had no problem adjusting to city-living aspect. I did however have trouble adjusting to what people are willing to pay for things here. It is stupid…really stupid. After experiencing the soul-sucking experience of living in Manhattan, we hopped across the Hudson River to New Jersey. While in New Jersey, I was driving for Uber/Lyft, but ultimately ended that practice as the cost benefit analysis proved it was a money pit.
As of 2017, we relocated to the Chicagoland area. I work for MegaCorp, and asked to transfer offices in order to be closer to family (the lower COL was also a nice bonus).
My wife is from Dayton, O. She had been living Columbus and working in the fashion industry. Columbus has a sizable industry cluster pertaining to the fashion world if you weren’t aware. Needless to say, it wasn’t hard for her to get a job in New York City. She joined me in New York shortly after I was relocated. She worked as a technical fashion designer for several of the biggest names in the business while here. That is until baby #1 came along. At that point, she became a stay-at-home-mom (remember how I said things were stupid expensive in NYC?). Since making that transition, she has been plugging away part-time as an editorial consultant and also sells vintage and costume jewelry on Etsy.
HOW DID WE GET HERE?
Live Free Family came together as an assortment of ideals slowly worked their way together for us: minimalism, spending more time as a family, frugal living, and financial independence.
My job is in the financial realm so I am constantly tinkering on our own balance sheet and looking for additional optimization. This blog is a byproduct of that energy.
